How I Broke Free From Burn Out
I have been many things over the years—a teacher, yogi, athlete, wife, mom, entrepreneur, executive, and leader—all of which have come with both gifts and challenges. From a young age, I was driven by curiosity and pushed myself to constantly do more, learn more, be more. The poster child for perfectionism and over achieving, which was all well and good until I was diagnosed with Crohn’s at age 17 and my body struggled to keep up with my spirit.
From the initial autoimmune diagnosis as a teenager, it was a nonstop struggle to live a normal life for decades after my diagnosis. My body and mind always felt heavy and fatigued. The doctors prescribed drug after drug to alleviate my symptoms, but there was no real solution and I was told “there is nothing that can be done, there is no reason why, the best we can do is try to manage the symptoms in between flares”.
My intuition told me there had to be an alternative to the medley of drugs and constant trips to doctors and hospitals. So, my journey of exploration began. Trying different diets and healing practices, I discovered many amazing tools along the way. Yoga and meditation helped me calm my nervous system, quiet my mind and access deep peace. The profound impact of yoga on me led me to open my own yoga business, which I nurtured and successfully grew over 8 years, sharing the power of yoga with thousands of people.
However, in typical “Type A” fashion, I continued to push forward constantly in life – fighting through any pain, fatigue, anxiety and overwhelm. During my periods of “calm”, I would cram more in. I was constantly taking on the weight of the world at all costs to achieve my goals, inevitably always hitting some crash and burn point where I needed to rest and reset. The cycle of burnout just became a familiar cadence that I accepted as normal.
Eventually, new symptoms manifested and I was diagnosed with additional conditions: Hashimoto’s, Rosacea, Eczema, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Depression, Anxiety, Insomnia and Episcleritis.
After a particularly devastating flare that landed me back in the hospital in early 2019, I decided to dig even deeper for answers in order to connect the dots between all of my symptoms. I discovered “functional medicine” which became another cornerstone for my healing. I took a deep dive into study and enrolled in a professional program of study, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition®. FDN is a holistic method of identifying malfunctions and underlying conditions at the root of most common health complaints.
That was the final piece of the puzzle for me to fully heal! Combining ancient wisdom, alternative healing modalities and modern science allowed all of the pieces to come together. I not only restored myself to radiant health using a mind-body medicine approach, but also discovered a new purpose in life–being a guide for others on their path to help them transform from stressed out to soaring!
